QUEBEC CITY — A fourth-quarter comeback fell short for the Winnipeg Wesmen Saturday morning.
The Wesmen men's basketball team battled back from a double-digit deficit in the final two minutes, but ultimately dropped a 95-92 decision to the No. 8-ranked St. Francis Xavier X-Men at the Laval Rouge et Or tournament.
Winnipeg trailed 92-89 and took a timeout with 2:05 to go and then proceeded to tear off an 11-2 run that cut the lead to two with under a minute to play. Deon Ejim made a jumper on the following possession to push X's lead to 94-92 and
Shawn Maranan hit a shot of his own the next trip down to get it back to two with 14 seconds left.
The Wesmen trailed by eight at the half and 68-60 entering the fourth quarter against the X-Men, who won all three games at the tournament including an upset of No. 1-ranked Ottawa.
Maranan finished with 24 points, seven assists and six rebounds, and
Alberto Gordo added 21 points, seven rebounds and three steals.
Donald Stewart scored 16 and
Kato Jaro had 12 off the bench.
The Wesmen made 9 of 32 from three, shot 47.2 per cent from the field and won the rebounding battled 37-32.
Ejim wound up with 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead the X-Men, who got 20 points from Gatluak James.
