The Winnipeg Wesmen will probably want to forget Friday night as soon as possible.
The Trinity Western Spartans hit 12 threes and held the Wesmen men's basketball team to its poorest shooting night of the season and pulled off an 80-66 win in Canada West conference action at the Duckworth Centre.
The loss sent the Wesmen to 14-5 on the season with only Saturday's rematch left to play as their playoff fate remains in limbo. The Wesmen can finish anywhere from third to fifth in the final RPI standings that determines conference playoff seeding. A win Saturday will insure a top-four spot and a hosting spot for the first round. A loss, combined with a UBC win at Victoria Saturday, would bump the Wesmen to fifth and put them on the road when the post-season begins next weekend.Â
Friday night the Wesmen shot 30.8 per cent from the field, their worst outing of the season and made just eight of 33 from three. On the other side, the Spartans were 12-for-30 from three and led virtually the entire game, taking a 20-12 lead after a quarter and a 34-27 advantage into half.
Donald Stewart had 17 points to lead the Wesmen, who got a double-double from
Mikhail Mikhailov with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Malachi Alexander finished with 11 points, as did
Alberto Gordo off the bench.Â
Ryan Luke had a career-high 10 rebounds.
The Spartans (12-7) were led by Connor Platz's 18 points and 15 rebounds. Austin Galuppo had 17 off the bench and David Mutabazi scored 15 with 12 rebounds.
