WVB | Wesmen win another, keep hope of hosting alive

The Winnipeg Wesmen know they need to keep winning to keep their hosting hopes alive.

Luckily, they keep doing it.

The Wesmen women's volleyball team won its third straight match and kept pace in the top half of the Canada West playoff picture with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-16, 25-20, 25-19) win over the Saskatchewan Huskies Friday night at the Duckworth Centre.

The Wesmen posted a season-high 91 digs and had five players record double digits in that category in improving to 17-6 on the season, good enough — for now — to stay in the top four of the conference and in contention to host a first-round playoff series next weekend.

The Wesmen are ahead of fifth-place Fraser Valley based on a sets won/sets lost tiebreaker and will likely need to win again Saturday to keep that fourth-place standing.

Emma Parker had a season-high 23 kills with 16 digs, while hitting .267 for the match as the Wesmen bounced back from a lacklustre first set to dominate the rest of the way.

Winnipeg, which hit .020 in the first set, attacked at .286, .250 and .269 in Sets 2-4.

Taylor Kleysen had her third double-digit kills night of the season with 10. Ashleigh Laube also had 10 kills with a match-high 20 digs, which also marked a season-high.

Taylor Cangemi had 17 digs, a season-high, Selva Planincic added 15 and Portia Switzer 10.

Mandi Fraser's nine kills led the Huskies, who are out of playoff contention. Olivia Mattern's 19 digs led five Huskies in double figures. Averie Allard and Jessica Andjelic both had 16, Caet McCorkell chipped in 13 and Andjela Dikic dug up 10.

The Huskies hit .181 for the night.

The two teams will meet again Saturday on Senior Night for six Wesmen who will play their final conference match on home floor. Parker, Laube, Kleysen, Kely Warmington, Haille Bujan and Mikaela Cameron will be honoured in a pre-match ceremony.

The match can be seen live on Canada West TV.
