While one team celebrated the fact they'll play at home next weekend, the Winnipeg Wesmen trudged off knowing they'd be staying home next weekend.
The Saskatchewan Huskies officially doused all Wesmen hopes of a post-season berth Friday, earning a 3-1 (25-27, 25-21, 28-26, 25-19) Canada West conference victory at the Duckworth Centre.
The loss sent the Wesmen to an 8-15 record with one match to play, taking a window of playoff aspirations that remained slightly open entering the night and slamming it shut. The Wesmen are now unable to leapfrog eighth-place Manitoba, which remains a match ahead of Winnipeg but holds a sets won/lost tiebreaker.
The Wesmen will close the season Saturday night, Seniors Night, while the Huskies will prepare for a home playoff date, a privilege they officially earned with Friday's win.
Winnipeg watched three-point leads late in a pivotal third set slip away. The Wesmen led 19-16, 21-18, and 22-19, and had set point opportunities at 24-23 and 26-25, only to watch the Huskies find away to overcome them.
Liam Kristjanson and
Nigel Nielsen both had 16 kills for Winnipeg, which got a match-high 15 digs from
Darian Picklyk, playing in his next-to-last game as a Wesmen.
Dylan Mortensen led the Huskies (16-7) with 23 kills. He now stands three shy of second place all-time in Canada West and is only nine away from becoming the conference's all-time kills leader.
Levi Olson added 12 kills as the Huskies hit .206 on the night to Winnipeg's .185.
Saturday's match goes at 5 p.m. CT and can be seen on
Canada West TV. Senior Night will honour
Jeff Peitsch, setter
Matt Klysh, left side
Eric Dornez and Picklyk.
