Box Score REGINA — The Winnipeg Wesmen are coming home with two wins in two nights to start their non-conference season.
Alberto Gordo had 19 points and shot 70 per cent from the field to lead the Wesmen men's basketball team to an 82-57 pre-season win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns Friday to wrap up the four-team Regina tournament.
Gordo hit seven of 10 from the field, including 3-for-5 from three, as the Wesmen lead nearly wire-to-wire in winning their second tune-up of the 2023-24 season.
Winnipeg trailed 7-5 early in the game, then went on a 14-2 run and never trailed again. The Wesmen led 43-36 at the half and outscored the Pronghorns 21-9 in the third quarter, extending their lead to 19 heading into the fourth on the strength of a Gordo three and layup in subsequent possessions before the buzzer.
Mikhail Mikhailov, who had a double-double in a win Thursday over Regina, added another 18 points and six rebounds on Friday.
Donald Stewart and
Emmanuel Thomas both had 11 points, with Thomas making 3 of 4 from three.
Shawn Maranan had a game-high seven assists with nine points.
Shae Gibb lead Lethbridge with 12 points.
The Wesmen shot 50 per cent from the field and held the Pronghorns to 19-for-58 shooting. Winnipeg made 9 of 24 from three and 15 of 22 from the line.
Winnipeg outrebounded Lethbridge 43-29.
The team returns home and will play two more non-conference games at Manitoba Oct. 5 and 6, when they face Lakehead and McMaster from the OUA.
