MVB | Wesmen ground Griffins for third straight win

A three-match win streak has come at just the right time for the Winnipeg Wesmen.

The Wesmen men's volleyball team once again dominated the MacEwan Griffins and earned a 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-23) Canada West conference men's volleyball victory Saturday at the Duckworth Centre.

The win was Winnipeg's third in a row and the weekend sweep of the winless Griffins helped vault the Wesmen into the top half of the playoff picture with six matches to play. The Wesmen (11-7) sit in fourth place in the conference with doubleheaders against Mount Royal, Manitoba and Calgary left on the slate.

Next weekend's trip to MRU will be the first in a string of crucial clashes if the Wesmen hope to not only make the post-season, but also host a playoff series.

On Saturday, they took care of business against a team that has now lost 20 straight dating back to last season. The Wesmen held MacEwan to .078 attacking and one of their few blips the entire night was falling behind 4-1 in the first set. From there, however, the Wesmen won 14 of the next 19 points to take an 18-9 lead and they were rarely tested much beyond that.

The Wesmen were able to get a large portion of their bench playing time throughout the night with 14 players seeing at least some game action.

Nigel Nielsen and Liam Kristjanson both had 10 kills while hitting .474 and .471, respectively. Nielsen also had nine kills, tying for a team-high with Ben Traa who worked in as a second libero.

Daylan Andison led the Griffins with nine kills and Mitchel Gorman added eight with eight digs. Daniel Hebert had a match-high 11 digs.

The Wesmen will head to Calgary to take on the Cougars (11-6) in a Friday-and-Saturday doubleheader that can be seen on Canada West TV.
