ABBOTSFORD, B.C. — The Winnipeg Wesmen fell short in pulling off an upset on another tumultuous travel day.
The Wesmen women's volleyball team couldn't close out a 2-1 lead and dropped a 3-2 (22-25, 25-19, 24-26, 25-20, 15-11) Canada West conference decision to the No. 6-ranked Fraser Valley Cascades Thursday night.
Selva Planincic had a career-high 22 digs as the Wesmen fell to 6-11 as they continue to seek out one of the eight playoff positions. With a five-set loss, the Wesmen were still able to earn a single point and now sit two points back of eighth-place UBC-Okanagan with a match in hand.
The match was the first of two rescheduled from the Jan. 12-13 weekend when the Wesmen were unable to travel due to inclement weather across the prairies. Two weeks later, however, the travel was far from smooth. The Wesmen were slated to arrive in Abbotsford on Wednesday but their flight out of Winnipeg was cancelled, forcing the team to instead travel and arrive on game day.
And the Wesmen briefly looked travel-weary in the first set as the Cascades scored four of the first five points, led 12-6 and 15-10 before the Wesmen went on a run. Winnipeg scored four of the next five points to cut the deficit to 16-15 and then took its first lead at 19-18. All in, it was a 14-5 run that got the Wesmen to set point with a 24-20 lead after that early 15-10 disadvantage.
With a chance to put the upset away, the Wesmen were never able to get much going in the fourth set. They led 10-8 but the Cascades (14-3) went off on a 7-1 run and never looked back.
Jaya Dzikowicz had 15 kills and 10 digs, and
Brooke Duncalfe added 14 and nine.
Taylor Cangemi had 12 digs.
The Wesmen were able to hit only .133 for the night while the Cascades hit .250.
Gabrielle Attieh and Lauren Attieh had 18 and 16 kills respectively to lead UFV. Talia Attieh notched 15.
Thursday was the first meeting between the two programs since the Wesmen eliminated the Cascades from last year's Canada West quarter-final in a three-match series win at the Duckworth Centre.
The teams meet again Friday in a match that starts at 5 p.m. CT and can be seen on Canada West TV.
