The Winnipeg Wesmen got a sweet Saturday from the M&M's.
Shawn Maranan had another double-double and
Mikhail Mikhailov scored 25 points to lead the Wesmen men's basketball team to an 87-63 win over the MacEwan Griffins in a Canada West conference game at the Duckworth Centre.
The guard-to-big combo was working wonders for the Wesmen: Five of Maranan's game-high 11 assists led to points for Mikhailov, who shot 11-for-14 from the field as the Wesmen won for the fourth time in five games and improved to 11-5.
The team's RPI, however, has it in eighth place in the playoff seeding, meaning the Wesmen would be sent to a play-in game in the first round of the conference tournament.
Maranan posted his second straight double-double, adding 13 points and finished the weekend with a 4-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio while shooting an efficient 9-for-15 from the field over the two wins.
For the second straight night, Mikhailov was a picture of efficiency, shooting 11-for-14 to finish the weekend 75 per cent from the field.
Donald Stewart added 17 points — and was 4-for-6 from three — for the Wesmen, who led 24-16 after a quarter but held just a 39-35 edge going into halftime. Winnipeg, however, opened the third quarter with a 15-5 run and outscored the Griffins 30-18 in the period.
Alberto Gordo, after being held scoreless on Friday, scored 11 points on 5-for-9 shooting.
Elijah Mensah had 10 points with seven rebounds in reserve.
Milan Jaksic scored 15 points off the bench to lead the Griffins (0-16). Joel Seke scored 13 and Job Janda 12.
