MBB | Wesmen get whipped in the Wheat City

BRANDON — What is normally a pretty hospitable road trip for the Winnipeg Wesmen was anything but Friday night.

The Wesmen men's basketball team made just four three-pointers and the Brandon Bobcats used a 25-13 second quarter to pull away in an 86-61 Canada West conference victory at the Healthy Living Centre.

It's just the third time in the past 11 years the Wesmen have lost to the Bobcats in Brandon, and it's Brandon's largest margin of victory over Winnipeg since an 89-61 win on Jan. 8, 2009.

The Wesmen made just four of 30 from three, while the Bobcats (8-3) went 13-26 from long range.

The Bobcats outscored Winnipeg (7-4) 25-13 in the second quarter to take a 44-31 lead into halftime. They then pushed the lead to 19 with a quick 8-2 run over the first 2:41 of the half.

Shawn Maranan had 14 points to lead the Wesmen, who got eight points and seven rebounds from Alberto Gordo, but had only one player in double figures.

Khari Ojeda-Harvey had a game-high 22 points for the Bobcats, and Sultan Haider Bhatti added 20. Travis Hamberger chipped in 18 and Elisha Ampofo 13.

One bright spot for the Wesmen was the bench production, which totalled 20 points to Brandon's nine. Elijah Mensah scored eight points in 15 minutes, and freshman Noah Kankam added seven.
