WVB | Vallis near perfect as Wesmen take down TRU

Grace Vallis put her name in the Canada West record books to help the Winnipeg Wesmen win Saturday night.

Vallis posted a career-high 17 kills and the Wesmen women's volleyball team won for the fifth time in six outings, defeating the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack 3-1 (23-25, 29-27, 25-22, 25-20) in a Canada West conference match at the Duckworth Centre.

The Wesmen improved to 6-8 after starting the season 1-7.

Vallis, a redshirt freshman middle blocker, was the picture of efficiency: She made no errors on 21 swings for an .810 attacking percentage, a mark that is a season-high for a four-set match in the Canada West this season and stands third all-time in conference history for a four-setter.

For the weekend, Vallis went error-free on 41 swings.

She also added two solo blocks and six assists to her stat line Saturday.

Where the Wesmen struggled to finish out sets in a loss on Friday, they were much more clinical in closing on Saturday. They broke a 19-19 in the third set by winning four straight points and, after the Wolfpack had pulled to 20-19 down with three points out of four, the Wesmen again surged ahead with four straight points to take control.

Jaya Dzikowicz had her second straight solid outing with 13 kills and seven digs. Brooke Duncalfe added 11 kills and nine digs.

Taylor Cangemi posted 17 digs, her fourth straight match with double-digit digs and the fifth in the past six.

Brooklyn Olfert led the Wolfpack (3-9) with 23 kills and 15 digs. Ema Palkovicova added 14.
