CALGARY — The Winnipeg Wesmen got everyone involved in a convincing win on Friday night.
Five Wesmen scored in double figures and the UWinnipeg men's basketball team used a second-half surge to hand the Mount Royal Cougars their first loss of the season, an 83-58 Canada West conference victory.
The Wesmen, who played only one game on opening weekend and then faced a bye week, improved to 2-0, while MRU fell to 4-1.
Shawn Maranan flirted with a triple-double with 18 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds, and
Donald Stewart led all Wesmen in scoring with 20 points and 10 rebounds,
Ryan Luke, who shot 6-for-7 from the field, finished with 13 points, and
Emmanuel Thomas and
Alberto Gordo both scored 10.
The Cougars hung around through most of the first half and tied the game at 37 in the third quarter, but a 15-2 Wesmen run allowed the visitors to take over with Maranan scoring or assisting on 10 of the points in that stretch.
The Wesmen added to their cushion with a 17-2 run that opened the fourth quarter and gave Winnipeg a 72-48 edge.
Winnipeg shot 42 per cent from the field and 33.3 from three, while MRU was held to 23.9 per cent from the field. It was the second time in the teams' last three meetings that the Wesmen held the Cougars to under 25 per cent from the floor. The Cougars shot 21.7 in an 87-48 defeat in Calgary on Nov. 24, 2023.
The Wesmen outscored MRU 46-25 in the second half.
Dray Walburger and Keivonte Watts both scored 13 for the Cougars, and Daniel Owoeye had a game-high 14 rebounds.
