The stingiest team in the Canada West kept it up on Friday night.
The Winnipeg Wesmen men's basketball team ran its win streak to four games and held off the MacEwan Griffins 84-63 in their Canada West conference home-opener at the Duckworth Centre.Â
It was the eighth straight win — and ninth in the past 10 games — for the Wesmen over the Griffins and it allowed Winnipeg (4-0) to remain one of four unbeaten squads in the Canada West.Â
Albeit with a small sample size, the Wesmen are surrendering fewer points per game than anyone in the conference and sit third in U Sports for opponents' points per game at 61.0.Â
On Friday, they were at it again, forcing a season-high 23Â turnovers and turning that into 28 points. They held the Griffins to just eight first-quarter points and that helped set the tone on a night where the Wesmen were certainly not at their best shooting the ball.Â
The Wesmen were held to 39.4 per cent shooting and made just seven of 30 three-pointers, the second straight game they've shot below 40 per cent from the field and under 25 per cent from three.Â
One peculiarity: it was the third straight game the Wesmen held the Griffins to exactly 63 points, following up on two one-sided victories in January 2024.
Ryan Luke continued his impressive play to start the season, leading all scorers with 18 points and adding seven rebounds.
Shawn Maranan chipped in with 14 points and seven assists,
Malachi Alexander had 14 off the bench, and
Donald Stewart posted 13 points and 10 rebounds.Â
On one bright note for the Griffins, their bench strength was notable. MacEwan's reserves scored 41 points with Milan Jaksic's 17 points leading the way. He also grabbed seven rebounds. Diego Presingular added 12 and Damilola Osuma 10.Â
The Griffins made four of nine three-point attempts, the fewest threes attempted by a MacEwan team since it joined the Canada West in 2014.Â
The two teams meet again Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.Â
