WBB: Wesmen go cold in loss to Pandas

EDMONTON — A modest Winnipeg win streak came to an end Friday night at the hands of one of the top teams on the prairies.

The Wesmen women's basketball team was held to just over 28 per cent shooting and dropped its Canada West conference clash with the Alberta Pandas, 64-46 Friday night.

The Wesmen made 17 of 60 from the field in falling to 4-2 on the season coming off back-to-back wins and a 4-1 start to the campaign.

But the Pandas, who improved to 5-2 with their third straight win, were too much on this night, jumping out to a 37-24 lead at half and, after Winnipeg was able to win the third quarter 14-13, closed the fourth out by holding the Wesmen to eight points.

Jasia Hayden had a team-high 10 points and seven rebounds, Tana Layton had a season-high seven points, and Jennifer Kallon a team-high nine rebounds.

Sadie McMillan-Stowards added eight points on 3-for-5 shooting with four rebounds, a block and a steal.

Reece Hall led the Pandas with a game-high 18 points while Jenna Karach scored 16 off the bench.

Alberta held Winnipeg to 3 of 16 from three, but the Pandas weren't much better going 7-for-20.

The two teams meet again Saturday (6 p.m. CT) in a game that can be seen live on Canada West TV.
