EDMONTON — The Winnipeg Wesmen continue to find a way, and that route typically involves stifling defence.
For the fourth time this season, the Wesmen men's basketball team held an opponent under 60 points as it buried the Alberta Golden Bears 66-51 in a Canada West conference game Friday night.
It was Winnipeg's first win at Alberta in more than nine years and it gave the Wesmen the only undefeated record in the Canada West Prairie Division at 6-0.
The Wesmen are the top defensive team in the country and their opponents' points per game dipped below the 60 mark for the first time this season after Friday's performance. The Wesmen are giving up an average of 58.5 points per contest with two games left in the first semester.
After trailing 16-14 after the first quarter, the Wesmen used a 12-3 second-quarter run to help them to a 35-27 halftime lead. A quick 7-0 spurt to start the third quarter pushed the lead into double digits and the Wesmen led by as many as 16.
With Winnipeg leading by 15 to start the fourth, a Nate Waldron layup capped an 8-0 Alberta run that trimmed the lead to 57-50 with just over six minutes to play. The Wesmen, however, held the Golden Bears without a field goal the rest of the way and closed the game on a 9-0 stretch.
Donald Stewart had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Wesmen.
Malachi Alexander added 12 points and
Shawn Maranan had 10 points.
Logan Powell and Isaac Simon scored 11 apiece to pace the Golden Bears (3-4).
The Wesmen held the Golden Bears to 26.9 per cent from three, the fifth time this season Alberta has shot worse than 30 per cent from distance. In addition, the Bears shot 32.1 per cent from the field, their second-poorest shooting night of the conference season.
