WBB | Cougars pull away late to upend upset-minded Wesmen

REGINA — For the second straight night the Winnipeg Wesmen flirted with a major upset.

The Regina Cougars used a 15-2 third-quarter run to tamp out a Wesmen women's basketball team looking to end the season on a winning note, pulling away for a 63-55 win in Canada West conference action Saturday night.

The Wesmen were swept to close the season, but they gave the Cougars (15-5) all they could handle in Regina's final game before heading into the conference playoffs.

Winnipeg (5-15) opened the third quarter on a 7-2 run to up its lead to 27-21 and led 32-26 when the Cougars went on their run. The Wesmen went 3:40 without a field goal and, by the 2:17 mark of the third, the Cougars held a 41-34 advantage.

The Wesmen were able to get the lead down to three 1:13 into the fourth with layups from Sarah Boitson and Raia Guinto, but that was as close as they would get.

Anna Kernaghan had 18 points and six rebounds to lead the Wesmen and Guinto chipped in with 15 while making four of 10 from three.

The Cougars outrebounded Winnipeg 56-33 and got a game-high 20 points and 12 rebounds from Jade Belmore. Dayna Pearce scored 15.
