WVB | Wesmen stunned as playoff hopes disappear in loss to Regina

REGINA — The Winnipeg Wesmen were stunned Saturday and will miss the Canada West post-season.

The Wesmen women's volleyball team, needing just a win to qualify for playoffs, hit .098 and dropped a 3-2 (25-19, 20-25, 25-16, 23-25, 25-11) conference decision that left the Wesmen one spot short of the eight-team tournament.

A win over one-win Regina was all the Wesmen needed, but they lost starting right side Selva Planincic early on to injury and never found consistency. The Wesmen hit -.087 in the decisive fifth set and didn't hit better than the .182 they mustered in the fourth.

Jaya Dzikowicz had 17 kills and three aces to lead Winnipeg, which finished the season 9-15 and in ninth place. Thompson Rivers, which won its final game, moved into the top eight instead.

Brooke Duncalfe added 15 kills, 14 digs, four aces and two blocks. Portia Switzer, playing in her final match close to her hometown of White City, Sask., had 45 assists, 13 digs and two aces.

The Wesmen had 12 aces on the night, but couldn't slow a surprisingly adept Cougars attack. Regina hit .313 for the match including .419 in both the first and third sets and compiled only four attack errors in the three sets it won.

Bailey Balaberda posted a match-high 24 kills and added 15 digs for the Cougars, who finished the season 2-22.
