For the second straight night, the Winnipeg Wesmen had momentum thwarted in a four-set loss.
The Wesmen women's volleyball team stayed alive with a third-set victory but wasn't able to extend the match further in a 3-1 (25-20, 25-21, 23-25, 25-18) loss to the Manitoba Bisons in a Canada West conference match Saturday at the Duckworth Centre.
Winnipeg fell to 6-14 with its sixth straight loss and dropped to 12th in the Canada West, two matches out of the final playoff spot with four to play. The Wesmen are likely in need of four straight wins to end the season while also looking for help if they are to make the post-season.Â
On Saturday, the Wesmen were felled by a late run by the Bisons (17-3) in Set 1 in which they came back from a 19-17 deficit with four straight points and then, with a 21-20 lead, tore off four straight to close it.Â
In Set 3, the Wesmen got an early six-point run to wipe out a 5-1 deficit and later strung together four straight to turn a 10-9 lead into 14-9. The Bisons responded with seven straight points to take an 18-15 advantage, but the Wesmen scored six of the next eight to jump ahead again.
Winnipeg closed with four straight points to win the set after being down 23-21.Â
