MVB | Wesmen dominate, force decisive third match in CW semi

LANGLEY, B.C. — The Winnipeg Wesmen ended a losing streak on Friday. Starting a win streak Saturday will take them to a championship

The Wesmen men's volleyball team dominated the Trinity Western Spartans, scoring a 3-0 (28-26, 25-15, 25-19) win in Match 2 of the best-of-three Canada West semifinal series at the Langley Events Centre, forcing a third and deciding match with a berth in nationals and the conference championship on the line.

The win ended Winnipeg's 14-year stretch without a win in Langley and it evened the series at a match apiece with the decisive third contest going Saturday (7 p.m.) at the LEC.

The Wesmen, who swept the Spartans in a conference weekend earlier this season, had not won in Langley since a straight-sets victory in February 2010, a span of 22 matches in conference and post-season play.

But the Wesmen, who were sharp for Set 1 and most of Set 2 in a four-set loss in the opener Thursday night, looked nothing like the 7-seed and everything like the favourites on Friday. They held the Spartans to .123 attacking, the second lowest percentage of the season for Trinity, which made 24 attack errors on the night.

Winnipeg, meanwhile, hit .359 and made just six attack errors on 78 swings.

Nigel Nielsen was the lone attacker in double figures for the Wesmen, notching 12 kills and hitting .278. Paxton Koop had six kills on seven swings with no errors for a match-high .857. Isaiah Olfert added seven kills with a match-high four aces, and Jaxon Rose chipped in with six and a career-high 10 digs.

First-team all-Canada West outside Henry Rempel had 11 kills but was held to .061 attacking. He was the lone Spartan in double figures.
