WSOC: MacEwan strikes early to down Wesmen

Time added on has been a negative space for the Winnipeg Wesmen in 2024.

The MacEwan Griffins scored three first-half goals, including one just before the whistle, and walked away with a 5-0 win over the Wesmen in Canada West women's soccer action Sunday afternoon at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex.

Brenna Paquin scored in time added on in the first half to give the Griffins a 3-0 lead, a goal that came just two minutes after Nicole Brodeur had scored after a first half where the Wesmen largely held firm in the defensive third.

It was the second straight game the Wesmen had allowed a goal in time added on of a half, and the third straight game a team had scored in the final minute.

Hannah Harper had a goal (74th) and an assist to lead the Griffins (4-1-1) who won their third straight game and for the fourth time in five games. They remain tied with Saskatchewan for second in the Prairie Division, two points back of the Calgary Dinos.

Anneke Odinga, from the penalty spot in the 24th minute, and Sophie Lavallee in the 60th were the other goal scorers.

Camille Forbes made 12 saves for the Wesmen (0-6-0) and Elizabeth Knight made three saves for her fourth win of the season.

The Wesmen will host the Lethbridge Pronghorns and the Dinos Sept. 28-29 in their next action.
