Dinos hand Wesmen season-opening defeat

CALGARY — The Winnipeg Wesmen were handed a 10-0 defeat to start the Canada West women's soccer season Saturday afternoon.

The Calgary Dinos scored four goals in a nine-minute span of the first half to break the game open and hand the Wesmen a loss on Opening Day for the Prairie Division teams.

Rachel Barlow and Grace Moore both scored twice for the Dinos, who finished 8-2-4 last season and were ranked fourth in the Canada West pre-season coaches poll.

Keeper Camille Forbes made her Wesmen debut and made 12 saves as the Dinos fired 22 shots on goal and 40 shots in total.

Six true freshmen earned their first shirts of their career on Saturday with Scarlett Regnander-Farrell and forward Tynysha Smith earning their first career starts. Freshmen Kennedy Shymko, Grace Routledge, Milan Tavares and Isabella Caligiuri also saw 45 minutes each in their first career university match.

Smith mustered Winnipeg's lone shot of the game.

The Wesmen are on the road Sunday in Lethbridge to complete the weekend road trip.
