KAMLOOPS, B.C. — It is still the best start in Wesmen history. It just no longer a perfect one.
The UWinnipeg men's volleyball team hit a season-low .114 and the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack handed the Wesmen their first loss of the Canada West season, 3-1 (20-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-20) Friday night.
It was Winnipeg's first match since Nov. 30, 2024 — a 41-day layoff — and it set the Wesmen record back to 10-1, which is nevertheless still good for second place behind 11-1 Alberta.
On Friday, the Wesmen were held to .095 in the set at they won, and didn't hit better than .154 in any of the following sets.
The held an 11-8 lead in the second set, but gave up eight of the next nine points. In Set 3, they were up 21-20 before TRU tore off five straight and, in Set 4, they were victimized by a four-point Wolfpack run that broke a 16-all tie. After the Wesmen took a timeout, they got a kill from
Isaiah Olfert only to see TRU turn around and score the next three points and take full control.
Olfert finished with a match-high 18 kills and
Luke Lodewyks added eight.
Carson Brennan had a match-high seven digs.
Sam Flowerday led the Wolfpack (3-8) with 17 kills.
The rematch is slated for Saturday at 5 p.m. CT. (
