WBB: Wesmen can't slow down hot Huskies

The Winnipeg Wesmen couldn't slow down the nation's hottest team Friday night.

The No. 5-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies won their ninth straight Canada West conference game, defeating the Winnipeg Wesmen women's basketball team 87-37 at the Duckworth Centre.

The Huskies have won each game in their current win streak by nearly 40 points per game as they've surged to the top of the Prairie Division standings after losing their first two games of the season.

Mattea Teece had a team-high and career-high four steals for the Wesmen, who fell to 4-7 and are a game back of the final playoff spot in the Prairie Division.

Anna Kernaghan had eight points and six assists to lead the Wesmen, who held the Huskies (9-2) to 6-for-21 from three, the second-lowest total of three-point makes for the Huskies this season.

Jennifer Kallon had seven points, four rebounds and a career-high three blocks.

But Saskatchewan dominated the boards to the tune of 56-36 with 27 offensive rebounds.

Ella Murphy-Wiebe led four Huskies in double figures with 17 points and six rebounds. Logan Reider added 15 points and Courtney Primeau had 13. Gage Grassick also chipped in with 13 but added five rebounds, five assists and six steals.

The two teams meet again Saturday at 7 p.m. in the annual Shoot for the Cure game, which raises funds for breast cancer research.
