The Winnipeg Wesmen forced another five-setter but weren't able to come away with a win in a key conference clash Friday night.
The Wesmen women's volleyball team rallied back from 2-1 down to force a fifth set but dropped a 3-2 (25-21, 24-26, 25-19, 19-25, 15-13) Canada West decision to the Saskatchewan Huskies at the Duckworth Centre.
It was Winnipeg's fourth straight loss, a stretch in which they've played three five-setters. The Wesmen are 1-4 in five-set matches this season.
The Wesmen (5-8) remain in eighth position in the conference. The top 10 teams make the post-season and the Nos. 7-10 seeds play a first-round play-in series with the Nos. 7 and 8 seeds hosting. Trinity Western (6-9) swept at Calgary on Friday and remains on Winnipeg's heels for that last hosting position.
On Friday, the Wesmen held the Huskies to -.021 attacking in the fourth set as Saskatchewan (8-7) committed 11 attack errors to push the match to Set 5. But the Huskies turned it on in the fifth, hitting .450 with no errors and using an early run to take control. At 2-2, Saskatchewan scored five of the next six points and sent Winnipeg into a timeout.
The Wesmen, however, had one last push of their own: Trailing 13-9, the Wesmen tore off four straight points to tie the set. But back-to-back Saskatchewan points sealed the match.
Emily Lavallee's career-high 11 kills with five blocks led the Wesmen, who also got 11 kills and team-high 15 digs from
Selva Planincic,
Taylor Cangemi, who is honing in on 1,000 career digs, had 13, as did left side
Ella Werbiski.
The Wesmen hit .123 for the match with 50 kills and 28 errors, while the Huskies attacked at .208 with 64 kills and 26 errors.
Taryn Hannah's 19 kills were tops for the Huskies. Hannah also had 15 digs, one of five in double figures contributing to the Huskies' 86 digs on the night. Rosetta Cyr added 16 kills and 16 digs.
The two teams clash again on Saturday at 6:45 p.m. (
