MBB: Wesmen stay dominant in taking down Griffins

EDMONTON — The Winnipeg Wesmen continued their dominance over the MacEwan Griffins Friday night.

Emmanuel Ugbah had a career-high 17 points off the bench and the Wesmen men's basketball team held the Griffins to seven points in the first quarter to stroll to an 88-60 Canada West conference victory at the David Atkinson Gymnasium.

It was Winnipeg's 11th straight win over the Griffins and 13th in the past 15 contests going back to 1017.

Ugbah, a Winnipegger who returned home after transferring from Carleton following the 2023-24 season, also added nine rebounds while shooting 6-for-10 from the field.

Alberto Gordo led the Wesmen with 21 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Elijah Mensah added 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds off the bench.

All 12 Wesmen who dressed recorded at least a stat as the Wesmen improved to 2-0 ahead of Saturday's rematch (4 p.m. CT / Canada West TV).

The Griffins shot just 3-for-12 from the field in the first quarter as the Wesmen stomred out to a 28-7 lead. In the first, Winnipeg grabbed 12 rebounds to MacEwan's two and the Wesmen finished with a 48-27 edge in that column.

The Wesmen went on a 24-4 run over 8:08 of the first quarter and held the Griffins to just two field goals in that time.

Favour Igbinyemi led the Griffins with 12 points, Marcus Moore added 11 and Job Janda chipped in 10.

The new-look Griffins who had won only five conference games over the past seven seasons, but earned a split with Saskatchewan last weekend, fell to 1-2 under new head coach David Kapinga. They were playing without Brandon transfer Elisha Ampofo, who was injured last weekend.

The Wesmen shot better from three than the Griffins did from the field: Winnipeg shot 47.7 per cent from the field and made 11 of 28 from three, while the Griffins made just 3 of 15 from three and shot 33.9 per cent overall.
