EDMONTON — The Winnipeg Wesmen got in the win column in a big way Friday night.
Jazmin Birch had 11 points and 10 rebounds and the Wesmen women's basketball team held the MacEwan Griffins to 15 points in the first half en route to a 60-41 Canada West conference victory at the David Atkinson Gymnasium.
The Wesmen improved to 1-1 with a rematch Saturday at 2 p.m.
Winnipeg got a team-high 12 points from
Raia Guinto but it was Winnipeg's defence that made the biggest impression. The Wesmen held the Griffins to a paltry 14-for-70 shooting, including 3-for-23 from three.
The Wesmen held the Griffins to three points — on 1-for-17 from the field with eight turnovers — in the second quarter. The Wesmen entered the second quarter down 12-11, but went on a 15-0 over 8:29 to start the quarter to take control.
All 12 players who dressed got in the game and recorded a stat for the Wesmen, who beat the Griffins for the 10th straight time.
Unity Obasuyi led the Griffins with 17 points but did it on 5-for-24 shooting. Toni Gordon added 11 with eight rebounds.
