The Winnipeg Wesmen fell just short of ending a lengthy losing streak to one of the country's top teams.
The Wesmen women's volleyball team pushed the Trinity Western Spartans to five sets but ultimately dropped a 3-2 (25-23, 23-25, 25-20, 15-25, 15-11) Canada West conference decision Friday night at the Duckworth Centre.Â
Winnipeg was looking for its first win against TWU since 2004 and, after a dominant fourth set, it looked like the upset was there for the taking.Â
But Trinity managed 10 kills on 23 swings in the fifth and held Winnipeg to a match-low .148 to improve to 3-0 on the season.
The Wesmen fell to 1-2.Â
Megan Kendziora led the Wesmen with a career-high 16 kills and 10 digs, and
Brooke Duncalfe added 15 and 15 as the Wesmen tallied 70 digs, the second time in three matches this season they've hit that mark.Â
Freshman left side
Anna Filippin-Buller had a breaktout match coming on as a sub in the second set and finishing with 10 kills and .421 attacking with five digs.Â
Fifth-year libero
Taylor Cangemi led the Wesmen with 19 digs.
Maryn Boldon had a match-high 26 kills with 11 digs and Kaylee Plouffe had 16 kills for the Spartans.
The teams meet again Saturday at 6:45 p.m.
