The Winnipeg Wesmen continued building their resume off the backs of Alberta teams Friday night.
The Wesmen men's basketball team extended its win streak to three games with a dominant second and third quarter in an 81-71 Canada West conference triumph over the Alberta Golden Bears.
The Wesmen, who have won four of their last five, improved to 6-2 having played seven straight games against teams from the province of Alberta.
It was the third straight win over the Golden Bears — and fourth in the past six — as the Wesmen pulled to within percentage points of U of A for first place in the Prairie Division.
And they did so by storming back from 14 points down with a 31-16 second quarter and a 27-13 third.
After the Bears went up 30-16 1:20 into the second, the Wesmen responded with a 20-6 run that tied the game. The teams traded the lead three times after that and, with Alberta leading 40-39, Winnipeg tore off a 6-0 run to close the half and then started the third quarter with another 13-2 spurt that gave the Wesmen a 16-point edge. They would push that lead to 19 points heading into the fourth.
Malachi Alexander led four Wesmen in double figures with 18 points and
Kato Jaro scored 16 with eight assists. Jaro ranks fourth in the Canada West in assists per game with 5.5.
Elijah Mensah scored 14 points, on 7 for 11 shooting off the bench, and
Alberto Gordo scored 11 with six assists and five rebounds.
Kyle Varner scored 14 to lead the Golden Bears (7-2). Nate Waldron added 11 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, and Fahad Yusuf scored 10.
