The Winnipeg Wesmen are still searching for their first home win.
The Mount Royal Cougars built up a double-digit lead heading into halftime and handed the Wesmen women's basketball team a 76-66 Canada West conference defeat Friday night at the Duckworth Centre.
Winnipeg fell to 2-2 on the season with its second home loss in as many tries. The Wesmen entered the weekend after back-to-back wins at MacEwan last weekend.
The Wesmen built up a 14-5 lead early on, but an 18-7 MRU run that stretched into the early moments of the second quarter gave the Cougars the lead and the Wesmen wouldn't lead the rest of the way.
A 28-12 second quarter gave the Cougars a 47-33 heading into half.Â
Sarah Boitson had 11 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Wesmen. The fourth-year post also made a career-high three three-pointers on four attempts.Â
Raia Guinto added 10 points for the Wesmen, who shot 37.5 per cent from three and 38.5 per cent overall.Â
The Cougars were drastically better on the glass, grabbing 53 rebounds to Winnipeg's 36. The Cougars had 22 offensive rebounds to U of W's nine.Â
Jenika Martens led three Cougars in double figures with 20 points. She also had 18 rebounds and 11 turnovers. Nora Luca scored 18 points and Jenessa Ramsoomair added 15.Â
The two teams meet again Saturday (7 p.m.) at the Duckworth Centre.Â
