Saturday could not present another last-second stunner for the Winnipeg Wesmen.
Â
One night after winning a game on a
Kato Jaro layup in the final 10 seconds, the Wesmen men's basketball team was presented a similar situation but couldn't find the same heroics, dropping a 77-76 decision to the Mount Royal Cougars at the Duckworth Centre.
Â
The Wesmen led most of the night and held a 10-point lead with 6:41 to go in the fourth but the Cougars went on a 14-0 run over the next 3:12 to take a 75-71 lead. A
Ryan Luke three brought the Wesmen to within one. The Cougars got a pair of Kuach Gajak free throws and the Wesmen got a
Donald Stewart putback with 34 seconds to go to keep the lead at one. Winnipeg forced a defensive stop on the next possession to get the ball back with 10 seconds to go. The Wesmen, however, weren't able to get a decent look at the rim and ultimately turned the ball over on a forced shot from
Emmanuel Ugbah.Â
Â
Winnipeg fell to 3-2 while MRU improved to 3-3.Â
Â
Malachi Alexander led the Wesmen with a game-high 20 points. Jaro finished with 14 and
Ryan Luke had 12 with a game-high nine rebounds.
Elijah Mensah added 11 points.
Â
Sam Birnie led the Cougars with 15 points and DJ Roberts chipped in 10.Â
Â
The Wesmen will have a bye next week before hitting the road to Calgary to take on the Dinos, Nov. 21 and 22.Â
