LETHBRIDGE, Alta. – The Winnipeg Wesmen will be on the outside looking in for the Canada West women's basketball playoffs.
A fourth-quarter surge propelled the Lethbridge Pronghorns to a 79-64 victory over the Wesmen women's basketball team in Canada West action Saturday night at 1st Choice Savings Centre. Lethbridge outscored Winnipeg 34-16 in the final frame in a game Winnipeg needed to secure a post-season berth.
The Wesmen finished the conference season at 8-12 and in a tie for seventh with the Manitoba Bisons, who won the tiebreaker based on head-to-head results.
Playing in her final game as a Wesmen, Anna Kernaghan was tremendous, scoring a team-high 21 points with seven steals. She also had six rebounds and five assists.
The Wesmen led 30-27 at the half, were up by as many as nine in the third quarter and held a 48-45 advantage through three.
But the Pronghorns held Winnipeg without a point in the first three minutes of the fourth, using a 15-0 run to break the game open.
Raia Guinto added 11 points for the Wesmen, who struggled from the field, shooting just 29.3% overall and 24.3% from deep. Tamiya Ness, playing in her final game, added 10 rebounds for Winnipeg.
Courtney McKee led the charge for the Pronghorns, pouring in a game-high 25 points. Kyra Collier added a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds, shooting an efficient 7-of-13 from the field. Lethbridge controlled the boards, outrebounding Winnipeg 58-40, with Abby Stonehocker pulling down a game-best 15 rebounds to go along with five assists.
