A night after handing the Regina Cougars one of their most lopsided defeats in the long rivalry between programs, the Winnipeg Wesmen went out and gave 'em another.
Donald Stewart led five Wesmen in double-digit scoring and the Wesmen men's basketball team took down the Cougars 91-67 in a Canada West conference game Saturday at the Duckworth Centre.
The win improved Winnipeg to 11-3, kept the Wesmen in first place in the Prairie Division and followed a 26-point victory Friday night which stood as the most lopsided score between the two teams in 28 years.
Stewart scored a game-high 20 points, the second time in three games he's scored at least 20, and the Wesmen extended their conference win streak against the Cougars to eight games.
Alberto Gordo had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, marking the fourth straight game he's grabbed double-digit boards.
Elijah Mensah scored 13 off the bench,
Ryan Luke had 11 with seven rebounds,
Malachi Alexander also had 11 and
Kato Jaro scored nine with nine assists.
The Wesmen were 10-for-24 from three, the highest percentage they've shot in a Canada West game since making 47.6 per cent in a win at Regina, Feb. 10, 2024. They made five of 10 in the first quarter as they bolted out to a 29-12 lead in the first 10 minutes.
The Wesmen, on a five-game win streak, will remain in Winnipeg for the next two weekends — hosting the Lethbridge Pronghorns Jan. 23 and 24 before embarking on the home-and-home Duckworth Challenge with the Manitoba Bisons Jan. 29 and 31. They close the season at Saskatchewan Feb. 6-7.
Winnipeg entered Saturday a game up on Alberta for first in the Prairie Division and two games up on Manitoba.
Regina (4-10) was led by Lodie Kenyi and Sufyan Elkannan who both scored 11 points. Kaz Dornstauder added 10.
