CALGARY — The Winnipeg Wesmen got a much-needed win during a must-win stretch.
Brooke Duncalfe and
Megan Kendziora posted double-doubles and the Wesmen women's volleyball team earned a key 3-1 (25-18, 25-19, 19-25, 25-21) Canada West conference win Friday night that kept the Wesmen in the playoff hunt.
The Wesmen moved to 4-9 on the season, two points back of Fraser Valley for the 10th and final playoff spot. They're also two points back of MacEwan and three back of Calgary, two teams with whom the Wesmen have already split weekends.
On Friday, the Wesmen took care of business in a match that bordered on must-win with just seven matches remaining and four of them coming against conference powers Manitoba and Alberta.
On Saturday, the Wesmen will look to secure their first weekend sweep of the Cougars in the two programs' history.
Ella Werbiski led the way with 15 points on 13 kills and two aces, while Kendziora added 12 kills and 14 digs along with three block assists. Duncalfe was the other Wesmen in double figures in kills with 10 along with a match-high 16 digs.
Taylor Cangemi was the other Wesmen in double figures in digs with 11.
Sydney Scatcherd led four Cougars in double figures with 12 kills. Mya Morgan, Aurora Bentrim and Bronwynn Davies-Neira each had 10 as the Cougars fell to 2-11.
