The Winnipeg Wesmen clamped down in the fourth quarter and stopped their losing streak in the process.
Jazmin Birch scored a career-high 26 points and the Wesmen women's basketball team ended a 12-game conference losing streak with a convincing 68-51 Canada West win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre.Â
Birch also added 11 rebounds, shot 12-for-17 from the field, and grabbed three steals in putting the ribbon on an impressive weekend for the junior forward. On Friday, Birch had a career-high 13 rebounds and in helping the Wesmen gain a split of the weekend, made sure Winnipeg stayed in the playoff race in the Prairie Division.
The Wesmen are now 3-11 and two games back of the seventh and final playoff spot from 5-11 Manitoba, which is next on the slate for the Duckworth Challenge.Â
Outscoring the Horns 18-12 in the first, the Wesmen took a 32-26 lead into halftime. And after the Pronghorns cut the lead to 38-36 with 3:16 to go in the third, the Wesmen put together a 10-1 run over the next 1:31 to stretch the lead to 11.Â
In the fourth quarter, Lethbridge cut the deficit to eight with 7:58 to go, but the Wesmen held the Horns to just two field goals the rest of the way.Â
