The Winnipeg Wesmen win streak was snapped with a gut punch Thursday night.
Â
The Wesmen gave up a double-digit lead with a rusty fourth quarter and the Manitoba Bisons earned a 90-85 Canada West conference victory at the Investors Group Athletic Centre.Â
Â
The victory evened the Duckworth Challenge at 1-1 after Day 1 with the teams set to meet again Saturday at the Duckworth Centre.Â
Â
The loss ended Winnipeg's seven-game conference win streak, but the Wesmen remain in first place in the Prairie Division, although the grip on that lead just got a little looser.Â
Â
The Bisons outscored the Wesmen 25-16 in the fourth quarter and held Winnipeg to just one field goal over the final 2:20, an
Elijah Mensah layup right before the buzzer.Â
Â
The Wesmen led by as many as nine in the third quarter and were up seven before Taven Vigilance banked in a buzzer-beating three heading into the fourth.Â
Â
The loss also spoiled a career-game from guard
Kato Jaro, who scored a career-high 31 points with six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Mensah had 19 points and 11 rebounds,
Alberto Gordo scored 12 and
Malachi Alexander added 11.Â
Â
It was the most points the Wesmen, one of the top defensive teams in the country, have surrendered this year.Â
Â
Mason Kraus led five Bisons in double figures with 21 and 10 assists. Ramogi Nyagudi scored 17, Daren Watts 14, Tito Obasoto 12 and Vigilance 10.
