MBB: Wesmen cap season with win; prepare to host playoff game

SASKATOON — A win on the final night of the season has given the Winnipeg Wesmen their finest record in program history.

The Wesmen men's basketball team fought off a fourth-quarter push from the Saskatchewan Huskies and earned an 80-76 Canada West conference victory Saturday night.

The Wesmen wrapped the season with a 16-4 conference record, which matches last season's mark and stands as the best record in program history. Winnipeg finished conference and non-conference play with a 24-4 record, with the .857 win percentage against U Sports opponents setting a new standard in program history. The Wesmen have posted 24-win seasons in back-to-back years.

Alberto Gordo scored 21 points with nine rebounds and five assists to lead the Wesmen, who will earn a first-round bye on Friday before hosting the winner between Calgary and Thompson Rivers in a one-and-done quarter-final on Saturday at the Duckworth Centre.

Ryan Luke scored 16 with nine rebounds for the Wesmen, who played without starting guard Kato Jaro. Emmanuel Ugbah scored a season-high 17 points and Elijah Mensah scored 10 off the bench.

And while the Wesmen looked to pull away in the fourth quarter, the Huskies made sure it was not without drama. Trailing 70-62 with 5:25 to go, the Huskies went on an 8-0 run over the next 2:06 to tie the game. But Ugbah got a jumper to go on the next possession and Gordo followed with a three to give Winnipeg some breathing room.

Easton Thimm led the Huskies with 20 points, 20 rebounds and seven assists, Mohamed Mahadhi scored 15, and Emmanuel Bonsu and Dylan Miller both added 13.
