SASKATOON — A slow start against the country's No. 1 team hindered the Winnipeg Wesmen Saturday night.
The Wesmen women's basketball team fell to the same fate as many other teams before them losing to Saskatchewan 84-54 as the Huskies finished Canada West conference play with a perfect 20-0 record. They also extended their overall win streak to 50 games.
On Saturday, Saskatchewan got out to a 17-8 lead after a quarter and, while Winnipeg kept it close in the second quarter, the Wesmen nevertheless faced a 32-22 deficit at the half.
A
Jazmin Birch three on the first possession of the second half cut the lead to seven, but the Huskies went to work on an 11-2 run over the next four minutes to further take control. The Wesmen managed to get the lead into single digits one more time at 49-40 with just under two minutes to go in the third, but a 13-0 Huskies run that extended into the fourth quarter pushed the Saskatchewan lead beyond 20.
Jennifer Kallon scored a team-high 16 points and
Carmen Hiebert, playing in her final game as a Wesmen, finished with 10 points and a game-high seven rebounds.
Maya Flindall led all scorers with 17 points, Ella Murphy Wiebe added 14, Logan Reider scored 12 off the bench, Andrea Dodig 11 and Tea DeMong 10 as the Huskies get ready to host post-season play next weekend.
