Wesmen post impressive victory to wrap up road trip

TORONTO -- The Winnipeg Wesmen put an exclamation point on the opening weekend of their non-conference season.

The Wesmen women's basketball team shot better than 50 per cent from the field, and held the Toronto Varsity Blues to under 30, in a convincing 89-63 pre-season victory at the Goldring Centre Sunday afternoon.

The win wrapped up a three-games-in-three-days stretch for the Wesmen, who went 2-1 against OUA and RSEQ opponents. Winnipeg beat Ontario Tech in Oshawa on Friday and lost to Laval Saturday at Durham College.

Sunday's performance was by far the team's most impressive of the weekend, as the Wesmen shot 52.2 per cent from the field, their most efficient output against a U Sports team since they shot 54.4 per cent in a win over Brandon Dec. 2, 2021.

Jennifer Kallon once again led the team in scoring with 22 points on 8-for-9 shooting while also posting three steals in Winnipeg's first trip to the downtown Toronto gymnasium.

Sophomore Avneet Kainth made 5 of 9 from the field and finished with a career-high 15 points, and Jazmin Birch scored 14 with six rebounds.

The Blues, who finished 6-16 in OUA play last season, shot just 28.4 per cent from the floor and committed 15 turnovers.

Janet Enge led U of T with 17 points.
