Regina pulls off upset over travel-lagged Golden Bears

After a long night and an early morning, the Alberta Golden Bears were forced to work overtime.

And the Regina Cougars took advantage, getting a Jalen Edwards three late in regulation and holding on to post a 106-103 overtime win over the Bears in the second quarter-final of the Wesmen Classic Wednesday night.

Edwards, who fouled out in overtime, finished with a game-high 29 points and hit a three with less than 30 seconds remaining that tied the game at 91. Carter Millar had a look at a three earlier in the possession that rimmed out and the ball ricocheted to Edwards who knocked down a contested triple that wound up forcing the extra frame.

Millar finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and the Cougars scored five players in double figures. Majok Madol had 12 and Arinze Emeka 10 for the Cougars, who would be set up to play the winner of the Manitoba-Ottawa quarter-final.

Adam Paige’s 25 points lead Alberta, which was stranded in Calgary for hours the night before its game and only arrived in the city around 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Lars Ishimwe added 23 points, Abdullah Shittu had 18 and Isaac Simon 14 for the Bears, who were sent to the consolation side.
