The No. 4 Trinity Western men's volleyball team captured a 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-21) win over Winnipeg in an offensively-charged contest that saw both teams hit over .400 Saturday night in Langley, BC.
The Spartans improve to 3-1, Winnipeg falls to 0-4.
Blake Scheerhoorn gave the Spartans a 20-kill performance while hitting .655 and committing just one error to lead a TWU offence that hit .471 as a team.
Winnipeg was only slightly less efficient as setter Josh McKay, who had 32 assists, helped guide the Wesmen to a .415 attacking efficiency, with David Bommersbach leading the way with an errorless 13 kills on 25 attacks.
For the Spartans, Ryan Sclater added 12 kills while Aaron Boettcher proved effective at the net with seven kills and four blocks. Setter Devyn Plett had a match-high 39 assists.
Bommersbach's teammate Taylor Howe had nine kills while Garrett Jones had five kills on five attempts.
The first set saw intense action with the teams staying within three points of each other for the entirety. The Spartans eventually took the set with a final kill from Sclater. Scheerhoorn got off to a hot start on the night, leaving the opening set with 10 kills.
Sclater came out incredibly strong for the Spartans in the second set, collecting four kills before the game reached 20 points. Once again, the score was within three points throughout but, it was the Spartans repeating their first set score, 25-23.
The third set was also a tight affair and it wasn't until the match hit 21-17 that the Spartans led by more than four points. From there, they held off the Wesmen, taking the set 25-21.
Winnipeg returns to British Columbia to play UBC Okanagan Heat next Friday and Saturday.

The No. 4 Trinity Western men's volleyball team won its home-opening match against Winnipeg 3-1 (26-28, 25-12, 25-21, 25-16) Friday evening in Langley, BC
After dropping the first set 28-26, the Spartans (2-1) bounced back, winning the next three sets with both an impressive attack and a vaunted serving effort. Winnipeg remains winless at 0-3
The Spartans were led by the attacking duo of Blake Scheerhoorn and Ryan Sclater who combined for 39 of TWU's 53 kills. Scheerhoorn had 20 kills while hitting .562 while Sclater had 19 kills and hit .531. Middle Aaron Boettcher also joined the .500 club as he hit exactly .500, with seven kills on 12 attempts and just one error. Setter Devyn Plett had 42 assists.
On the Wesmen side, David Bommersbach had 15 kills and Brendan Black had 13 kills while Logan Brennan had a match-high 11 digs.
The first set was a tight fight, but three straight Wesmen points, capped by a Jaden Prive ace gave the set to Winnipeg.
In the second set, TWU found a consistent flow and rolled to a 25-12 win.
Scheerhoorn came out in the third set with both aggressive attacking and serving. Sclater brought strategic game play and smart hitting from the outside position to rally the Spartans to a close but convincing 25-21 win.
In the fourth set, the Spartans pulled away early and never gave Winnipeg a chance. After a block by Goossen and Scott Plocktis set up match point, Goossen finished it off with an ace that hit the tape and crawled over the net for the win.
