Wesmen Come Back From 0-2 Deficit To Beat WolfPack

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen Women's Volleyball team did it again. For the second consecutive weekend, Winnipeg erased an 0-2 deficit to win their match.

The Wesmen defeated the Thompson Rivers WolfPack 3-2 (20-25, 22-25, 25-19, 25-15, 15-13) Friday night in the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg extends their winning streak to two and improves their record to 2-5. The WolfPack with the loss drop below .500 to 3-4.

Fourth year outside hitter Ozana Nikolic celebrated her birthday in style. Nikolic had a match high 26 kills with a hitting percentage of .500 to lead the Wesmen. Tia Boroski was next with 14 kills and 12 digs. Sonia Rossy led the team in digs with 14. Fifth year righ side Mackenzie Jeffrey had four blocks. Fifth year setter Jayme Menzies finished with 37 assists and 10 defensive digs.

The WolfPack were led fourth year outside hitter Iuliia Pakhomenko's 17 kills. Krista Hogewoning added 13 kills. Kaitlin Lomas was a force at the net with seven blocks. Alyssa Wolf led the team in digs with 15.

The WolfPack came out firing in the first set opening up a 10-4 lead early on. Winnipeg stayed within striking distance but the WolfPack maintained their lead at 16-11 at the technical break and eventually would go on to win the opening set 25-20.

Set number two was a closer affair with the score tied on nine occasions and had the Wesmen leading 16-15 at the technical timeout. The WolfPack regrouped and came back to win the second set by a 25-22 margin.

Thompson Rivers looked ready to close out the match in the third set, jumping out to a 6-0 lead early on. After a timeout was called by Wesmen head coach Diane Scott, the team responded and managed to tie the score at 13-13 a few moments later. The teams exchanged points to 18-18 until Winnipeg went on a 7-1 run to win the third set 25-19.

Winnipeg had momentum on their side in the fourth set and it showed. The Wesmen had 11 kills and only two attacking errors to win the set in easy fashion by a score of 25-15, forcing a fifth and deciding set.

The hometown Wesmen tooka 12-9 lead late in the fifth set until the WolfPack responded with three straight points, two on kills by Kaitlin Lomas to take a 13-12 lead. Winnipeg did not panic as they went on to score the next three points, two on kills by Ozana Nikolic to close out the match with a 15-13 win in the deciding set.

The teams will wrap up their series on Saturday afternoon. Start time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
