Box Score The University of Winnipeg Wesmen extended their winning streak to four matches with a 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-13, 25-18) victory over the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack Saturday afternoon in Winnipeg.
Winnipeg with the victory improves to 4-4 while the WolfPack with the loss fall to 1-7.
Third year outside hitter David Bommersbach led the Wesmen with 15 kills. Taylor Howe added 11 kills and six digs. Brendan Black added eight kills, three service aces and a pair of blocks. Fifth year setter Josh McKay was solid with 34 assists, six kills, six digs and four blocks.
Brad Gunter led the WolfPack with 17 kills. Kyle Behiels added nine kills and three blocks. Setter Graham Stoliker had 30 assists and a match high 12 defensive digs.
The first set saw both teams battle as the score was tied six times before reaching the technical timeout. A kill by Bommersbach followed by a service ace by Black gave the Wesmen a 16-14 lead at the technical break. Winnipeg held their ground and went on to win the opening set 25-22.
Set number two started out similar to the first with neither team giving an inch to each other. The WolfPack found some breathing room, going on a 5-1 run to take a 14-9 lead. Another run by Thompson Rivers late in the set gave them a 24-19 lead. Winnipeg made it interesting, scoring three straight points to cut the lead to 24-22. A kill by Brad Gunter on the next play closed out the set in the WolfPacks favor, 25-22 to even the match.
Winnipeg rebounded in the third set jumping out to a 16-8 lead at the technical timeout. The WolfPack were kept off balance for the remainder of the set as Winnipeg compiled a hitting percentage of .650 with one attacking error on their way to a 25-13 win to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The hometown Wesmen with victory in their sights, once again had the early momentum leading 16-13 at the technical break. Winnipeg was once again efficient on the attack finishing the set with a hitting percentage of .345 on their way to a match closing 25-18 win in set number four.
The Wesmen will be at home next Friday and Saturday against the UBC Thunderbirds. The WolfPack return home to face the Brandon University Bobcats.
