Box Score The No. 5 ranked University of Winnipeg Wesmen put an end to the No. 1 ranked University of Alberta Golden Bears dream of a perfect season. The hometown Wesmen defeated the Golden Bears 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 29-27, 25-23) Saturday afternoon in the final match of the 2015-16 regular season at the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium in Winnipeg.
Winnipeg with the victory finishes regular season play with a record of 15-9 and a fourth place finish in the Canada West Men's Volleyball Conference standings. Alberta with the loss finish the season at 23-1. Alberta finishes in first place and will host the Men's Volleyball Final Four. Alberta's best season was in 2008-09 when they finished 18-0 and went on to win Canada West and CIS Championships.
Taylor Howe led the Wesmen with 13 kills. David Bommersbach followed with 10. Brendan Thielmann had nine kills and a team high seven digs.
Ryan Nickifor led the Golden Bears with a match high 22 kills. Taylor Arnett added 12 while Alex McMullin finished with 11.
Alberta had things going their way in the opening set, racing out to a 16-10 lead at the technical timeout. Winnipeg with Brendan Black at the service line reeled off four straight points to cut the lead to 16-14. After the teams exchanged points to 23-23, Winnipeg scored the final two points to win the set 25-23.
In the second set Alberta had the lead at the technical timeout by a slim 16-14 margin. The teams remained even till late in the set when Alberta found some breathing room at 24-20. Winnipeg scored two points to cut the lead to 24-22 but the Golden Bears scored the final point of the set to even the match at 1-1, winning the set 25-22.
Winnipeg came out with the advantage in the third set holding a 16-15 lead at the technical break. The Golden Bears fought back and opened up a 24-21 lead late until the determined Wesmen team fought back and erased five match points to win an eventful third set 29-27.
In the fourth set, Winnipeg held the advantage early on, leading 16-13 at the technical timeout. Alberta managed to close the gap on a few occasions including 23-21 late in the set. Alberta received a red card for disputing a call which automatically gave Winnipeg a point at 24-21. The Golden Bears scored two points to close the gap to 24-23 until Winnipeg on the next possession scored the final point to make the score 25-23.
Note: Three fifth year Wesmen players were honoured before the match. Brendan Black, Dustin Ross and Josh McKay each played their final regular season home matches as a Wesmen.
