Box Score The Winnipeg Wesmen women's volleyball team picked up their second victory of the week against their cross-town rivals. The Wesmen beat the Manitoba Bisons in five sets (25-27, 25-18, 23-25, 25-15, 15-8) Saturday afternoon at the University of Manitoba.
Winnipeg defeated Manitoba in straight sets Thursday night at the U of W to open the 25th Annual Duckworth Challenge.
The Wesmen came out strong in the first set before losing some momentum and ending up tied at 23. The Bisons, led by rookie Allison Alcock at the net, fought their way to a 27-25 win.
The home team looked to build on their late momentum in the first quarter, but fell to an early deficit in the second. Winnipeg's Chelsea Jones and Ozana Nikolic were consistently blocking and scoring kills to help their team take the set 25-18.
Manitoba captured the lead early in the third and held it for most of the set, until Winnipeg rallied back to tie it 22-22. The Bisons' Tori Studler scored two kills that helped her team keep the edge on the scoreboard and take the set 25-23.
The seesaw match continued in the fourth set, with Winnipeg surging to an early 10-3 lead. Wesmen Aaliyah Masepela was consistently blocking at the net, and captured five kills to lead her team to a 25-15 win, forcing a fifth set.
The final set was not as competitive as the rest of the match, with Winnipeg never losing the lead and finishing with a 15-8 win.
Winnipeg's Nikolic led the game with 19 kills, followed closely by Mackenzie Jeffrey with 14, while the Bisons' Tori Studler led her team with 11 kills. Winnipeg finished with 15 blocks for the team and Manitoba had 12.
Winnipeg will be on the road next Friday and Saturday in Calgary against Mount Royal.
