The No. 9 ranked UBC Okanagan Heat defeated the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 (25-12, 25-20, 25-27, 25-22) Friday night to complete a weekend sweep over the hometown Wesmen.

The Heat (10-4) defeated the Wesmen (1-13) in straight sets in Friday night's opener.

Kaitlynn Given, Aidan Lea and Siobhan Fitzpatrick each had 11 kills to lead the Heat attack. Michelle Jakszuk finished with 10 kills. Erin Drew was solid at the net with six blocks. Megan Festival led the team in digs with 15. Setter Sara McCreary had 43 assists.

Danika Picklyk led the Wesmen with 10 kills. Maria Colvin finished with seven kills and two blocks. Setter Rylie Dickson had 28 assists and 10 defensive digs. Karissa Kuhr had a strong serving match finishing with four service aces.

In a tight beginning to the opening set, the teams exchanged points to 8-7 in the Heats advantage. A 7-0 run by the Heat, sparked by three kills by Aidan Lea gave the Heat a 15-7 lead. Winnipeg was unable to cut into the lead as the Heat won the opening set 25-12.

Set number two saw both teams battle to a 10-10 deadlock early on. The Heat found some breathing room soon after leading 16-14 at the technical timeout. Later in the set two kills by Alex Rose cut the Heat lead to 19-18 but a 6-2 run by the Heat gave them the set by a score of 25-20.

Winnipeg did not fold in set number three. The Wesmen raced out to an 11-5 lead but the Heat answered back in a big way scoring nine unanswered points to lead 19-11. Later in the set Winnipeg went on a 5-0 run to take a 20-19 lead. The teams exchanged points to 25-25 when the Wesmen scored the final two points, a kill by Sadie McTavish followed by a Heat attacking error gave the Wesmen the third set 27-25.

Another big run by the Wesmen in set number four was the start the Wesmen needed, this time with Karissa Kuhr at the service line Winnipeg reeled off seven straight points to open up an 11-4 lead. The Heat went on a run of their own to tie the set at 15-15. Winnipeg made a charge late in the set trailing 23-21 but the Heat scored two of the next three points to win the set 25-22.

The Heat will be home to Trinity Western next weekend. Winnipeg will travel to Regina to take on the Cougars.
