REGINA, Sask. – The University of Regina Cougars defeated the University of Winnipeg Wesmen in four sets (25-16, 18-25, 28-26, 25-10) on Friday night in a Canada West match at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Diana Lumbala led the Cougars with 21 kills and had just one hitting error on 36 attacks, finishing with a blistering .556 hitting percentage and also piling up eight digs and eight blocks as the second-year outside hitter flirted with a triple-double in the victory.
The Cougars hit .361 as a team and opened up the match with a 25-16 win in the first set, only to have Winnipeg come back to win 25-18 in the second. The Cougars took a big 19-12 lead in the pivotal third set, but after a Wesmen timeout the visitors went on an impressive 12-4 run to give them a set point at 24-23. But Regina survived that Winnipeg set point with a Jenna Krahn kill, then a Molly Wade-Cummings kill kept the set alive on the Wesmen's second set point. The Cougars got their own set point at 26-25 which Winnipeg shook off with a Karissa Kuhr kill, but back-to-back kills by Lumbala gave the U of R a 28-26 win.
The fourth set was simply all Cougars. They hit .375 as a team in the set, which they led from start to finish and at one point scored 12 consecutive points on an extended serving run by Elizabeth Tooth. Regina won 25-10 in the fourth to clinch its second Canada West victory of the season.
Tooth finished with a career-high 38 assists and added eight digs, while Leah Sywanyk got the start and had eight kills and six digs. Krahn finished with six kills and 12 digs for the Cougars (2-13).

Danika Picklyk both had 11 kills for Winnipeg, with Picklyk adding 13 digs for a double-double. Libero
Madison Fyvie had a team-leading 21 kills and was even credited with a kill on the final point of the second set after one of her digs came over the net and down onto the Regina side of the court.
Maria Colvin finished with eight kills and a .412 hitting percentage.
The two teams will finish off the weekend series on Saturday night (5:00) at the CKHS.
