REGINA, Sask. – The University of Regina's men's volleyball team came out of the gates with a win in the opening set, but the Winnipeg Wesmen came back to win three straight sets for their second road win in as many nights on Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
David Bommersbach and Casey Schouten both had 16 kills to lead Winnipeg offensively as the Wesmen improve to 8-8 on the season and move up into a tie with Saskatchewan for the seventh and final Canada West postseason berth.
The Cougars led from nearly wire to wire in the first set, taking charge with six straight points early in the contest and never trailing after that. Matthew Aubrey led the U of R with five kills in the first set as the Cougars hit .333 as a team and took the early lead with a 25-19 win.
But a late push by Winnipeg in the second set the tone for the remainder of the match. Trailing 21-20 after three straight Regina points, Wesmen coach Larry McKay called a timeout and Winnipeg responded with five of the final six points – including two Bommersbach kills – and won the set 25-22.
The third set was nearly a carbon copy, with Winnipeg scoring five straight points to take the set after the Cougars had collected back-to-back kills to cut the lead to 20-19. The Wesmen were on fire offensively in the third with 19 kills and a .517 hitting percentage as a team. Regina jumped out to a 14-10 lead in the fourth, but Winnipeg collected 15 of the set's final 21 points to clinch the match with a 25-20 win.
Besides the 16 kills apiece from Bommersbach and Schouten, Winnipeg also had a nine-kill performance off the bench from
Brendan Thielmann. Setter
Mikael Clegg ran the Wesmen offence that hit .280 as a team and finished with 45 assists and six digs, while libero
Logan Brennan had a team-leading eight kills.
Dalton Wolfe had an outstanding day hitting for Regina, finishing with 10 kills and no errors on 13 attacks for a scorching .769 hitting percentage that unsurprisingly led all players. Aubrey finished with a team-leading 12 kills, while P.J. Seekings finished with 10 kills along with six digs and six blocks. Cody Caldwell chipped in with six kills and a match-high eight blocks, while setter Michael Corrigan had 40 assists and a match-leading nine digs.
Winnipeg will now prepare for a critical weekend series at home next Friday and Saturday against that same Saskatchewan team the Wesmen are now tied with in the standings.
The Cougars (0-16) will head to Kamloops, B.C. next weekend for a pair of matches against Thompson Rivers (1-13).
