Box Score The No. 2 ranked Trinity Western University Spartans gained a weekend split against the University of Winnipeg Wesmen after posting a hard fought five set victory Saturday night in Winnipeg. The Spartans won the match by scores of (15-25, 25-17, 18-25, 25-22,15-11).
The Spartans now sit with a record of 19-3, currently in 2nd place in the Canada West Men's Volleyball Conference standings. Winnipeg after weekend play goes to 12-10, 6th spot in the conference.
Winnipeg won the opening match of the weekend series in four sets Friday night.
Blake Scheerhoorn led the Spartans with 16 kills and seven digs and a hitting percentage of .350. Ryan Sclater finished with 14 kills and six digs. Aaron Boettcher compiled eight kills and three blocks.
Casey Schouten led the Wesmen with 14 kills. David Bommersbach had 13 kills and nine digs. Brendan Thielmann added 11 kills and a pair of blocks. Logan Brennan led the Wesmen with a match high 14 digs.
In the opening set Winnipeg reeled off nine unanswered points to take a 23-12 late in the set, before eventually closing out the set by a 25-15 margin. Winnipeg took advantage of eight Spartan attacking errors while only making two of their own. Brendan Thielmann had a strong opening set finishing with four kills.
The Spartans evened up the match winning the second set by a score of 25-17. The Spartans were perfect on their attacks finishing the set with no attacking errors and a hitting percentage of .400. Winnipeg struggled committing 11 errors.
Winnipeg found their mark in the third set. Brendan Thielmann pounded home three kills in the opening half to put the Wesmen up 16-9 at the technical timeout. Winnipeg was guilty of committing one error on the attacking end as they went on to win the set 25-18 to grab a 2-1 lead in the match.
In the fourth set, the Spartans held a 16-15 lead at the technical break when things got interesting. After the Spartans extended their lead to 19-16, forcing Wesmen head coach Larry McKay to take a timeout, the Wesmen scored four of the next five points to tie the score at 20-20. The teams exchanged points to 22-22 when the Spartans scored the final three points, the last coming on a kill by Jacob Kern to close out the set by a score of 25-22 to square the match at 2-2.
The teams battled to 11-11 in the fifth set until the Spartans on two kills by Ryan Sclater and one by Blake Scheerhoorn closed out the set by a score of 15-11.
Both teams will close out regular season play on home court next weekend. The Spartans will take on the Manitoba Bisons while the Wesmen will play the Mount Royal University Cougars on Friday and Saturday.
