WVB | Playoff return goes south for Wesmen women

LANGLEY, B.C. — The Winnipeg Wesmen weren't able to come out victorious in their return to the Canada West post-season.

The Wesmen women's volleyball team got 17 kills from Emma Parker but weren't able to slow the nation's top-ranked team in dropping a 3-1 (25-16, 25-12, 23-25, 25-17) decision to the Trinity Western Spartans Thursday in Match 1 of a best-of-three Canada West conference quarter-final.

The Wesmen are making their first playoff appearance since 2012.

Parker hit a team-high .267, but the Wesmen were held to .085 attacking as a team on the night. Madison Fyvie and Ashleigh Laube both had 10 digs.

Parker, Haille Bujan and Kalena Schulz each had two aces for the Wesmen, who had seven as a team.

Hilary Howe, the sister of former Wesmen men's player Taylor Howe, had 17 kills and 12 digs to lead TWU, the No. 1 seed in the conference post-season. Setter Dora Komlodi had four of Trinity's 13 aces on the night.

Trinity hit .324 for the night and made only 15 attack errors.

In Set 3, when the Wesmen stayed alive, Winnipeg hit .353.

Match 2 goes Friday at 8 p.m. CT and can be seen on Co-Op Canada West TV.
