Box Score DAVID LARKINS, Wesmen Athletics
Kely Warmington, you've earned the rest of the weekend off.
The third-year Winnipeg Wesmen middle blocker set career-highs for kills, points, blocks and swings, and matched a career-high in digs to help the Wesmen to a 3-2 (25-22, 25-27, 25-17, 20-25, 15-10) win in a Canada West women's volleyball match Friday at the Investors Group Athletic Centre.
Warmington had 15 kills on 30 swings (.433) and added nine total blocks (one solo) for 21 points en route to being named the Wesmen MVP for the women's volleyball portion of the Duckworth Challenge. She also added six digs.
Due to a scheduling change, the Wesmen are now off until they host Brandon on Thursday, giving them a chance to enjoy their first win over the Bisons this season while also moving a match ahead of their crosstown rivals for third place in the East Division.
The Wesmen were nearly perfect in service, committing just one error from the line, which matched their fewest errors in a match since committing one in a four-set loss at Saskatchewan, Nov. 28, 2015.
The win moved the Wesmen to 4-5 on the season, a half-match back of 4-4 Brandon.
The Wesmen won critical points late in the first set in a four-point rotation with freshman Breanne Bazin serving that turned a 17-17 tie into a 21-17 advantage. Bazin had one of her two aces during that stretch.
In the third set, the Wesmen fell behind 1-0 but tore off 12 of the next 14 points to take control.
The Bisons flipped the script in the fourth with a five-point run that took their lead from 15-11 to 20-11 and put the home side in control. The Wesmen were able to close to 23-19 with a five-point run of their own, but the Bisons forced the fifth.
In the fifth, a kill by Ashleigh Laube and two by Selva Planincic wiped out a 1-0 deficit and gave the Wesmen a lead they didn't relinquish. After an Ella Gray kill brought the Bisons to 8-7 down, the Wesmen won four of the next five points to take control.
Bazin made her first career start and had career-highs with 48 assists and 13 digs.
Laube matched Warmington with 15 kills and added 11 digs. Planincic had 11 kills and a career-high seven total blocks, one solo.
Emma Parker had a season-high 25 digs, falling one short of her career-high 26, which she had against Manitoba in 2019. She also had 11 kills.
Libero Taylor Cangemi matched a career-high with 14 digs, her fifth straight match with double-digit digs.
The Bisons were led by Keziah Hoeppner's 16 kills, while Andi Almonte had 12 kills and 18 digs to be named the Bisons MVP. Gray and Light Uchechukwu both added 11 kills. Julia Arnold had a match-high 27 digs.
