Box Score BRANDON — The Winnipeg Wesmen were one point away from finishing off their most impressive comeback of the season.
Instead, the Brandon Bobcats hung on and survived a furious rally from the Wesmen women's volleyball team and posted a 3-2 (25-23, 25-19, 17-25, 14-25, 17-15) Canada West conference win Saturday at the Healthy Living Centre.
Ashleigh Laube matched a career-high with 19 kills and had a season-high 17 digs as the Wesmen fell to 5-6 and remained percentage points behind Brandon (5-5) for second place in the East Division.
After trailing by two sets, the Wesmen came back to force a fifth and led 15-14 after a Laube kill.
Brandon, however, got a point of a Portia Switzer service error, an attack error by Selva Planincic and an ace from Rayvn Wiebe to close the match out.
After hitting .029 in the first set, the Wesmen went .258 in the second, .324 in the third, .250 in the fourth and .259 in the fifth, finishing with a .222 rate for the match.
The Bobcats, who were held to -.086 in the fourth, finished .167 for the match, their lowest total attacking in a win this season.
Emma Parker finished with 15 kills and a season-high 21 digs, and Planincic had 11 and 14 plus five block assists.
Wiebe's 14 kills and 20 digs led the Bobcats, who also got 13 and 13 from Nicole Ashauer, and 10 from Keely Anderson.
